POPPA HOWARD REVEALS THE SECRET OF INSTANTANEOUS COUNTING
Saved as “ Website-COUNTING.doc”
The other day I was sitting on my verandah having morning coffee with that brilliant mathematician Pythagoras (the guy who invented right angle triangles and something to do with a square-nosed Hippopotamus having two sides) and I threw a few crumbs out for the birds. Almost immediately a flock of birds descended onto my lawn. “What a lot of birds” I said “How many would you say there were?” I asked him., , , He took just a quick glance and immediately said “Exactly fifteen”
“Come off it” I said, , “I do not believe you. When I started to count, I only got as far as five when they all changed positions How on earth can you say that there are EXACTLY fifteen AND IN ONLY IN A MATTER OF HALF A SECOND??!!”
He said “ Have you a Cell-Phone Camera on you? , , If so, take a picture of them, and I will bet you R100 that when you count them carefully on the picture, there will be EXACTLY fifteen”
“O.K. Mister clever-clogs” I said “How did you do it?” He said “Very easy indeed, I did not count BIRDS, , , I counted PATTERNS. I saw that there were two squares, two triangles and one all on its own ( probably a baby bird waiting to be fed). Without even looking at the birds, that adds up to 4 + 4 + 3 +3 +1 = 15 “, , , , , , , , “Gosh!!, , Brilliant” I said.
The moral of course is “Like a good Conjuring trick, , , Everything is easy when once you know how!!”
A GOOD TIP
You can adapt this clever little trick to help you in everyday life, such as when trying to count Pills,Seeds, Pins, Buttons, Screws,,Nuts,Washers, Coins, Cards and dozens of other similar small items. In all these cases, however, arrange them with your finger-tips into squares before scooping them up. You will then cut down your normal counting time to a quarter!!.
And when you become more proficient , you could even try groups of six. Then a counting job that used to take five minutes could now be done in less than a minute !!!
A TAIL PIECE JOKE
A farmer was once asked how he counted sheep in a field so very quickly. “Oh very easy” he said “ I simply count their legs and divide by four!!”
